Jemima Wright Hancock was said to be the smallest woman in stature in the area where she lived. She was about four feet tall, the same height as her son when was six and half years old. When he was grown to manhood the remark was often made, "Although she was small, she was the mother of a good man, and a stout one." Of her eight children, only one son survived. The two older sons were both killed fighting the Revolutionary War, but her youngest son was spared because he was too young to join the army. That son Thomas, Jr., wax 5 foot 9 inches tall and was very large around the chest. Jemima lived with him and his wife after her husband's death.
