Thomas Hancock and his wife Jemima Wright were early settlers in Massachusetts, setting at Longmeadow. Before the Revolutionary War broke out he had invested heavily in the trade of ginseng, which is the root of a perennial sweet, famous for its medicinal properties, growing spontaneously in the eastern states. He found it a very profitable business. The root was dug, dried and shipped to England. At the beginning of the war all trade with England ceased and with it the ginseng business and Thomas became a pauper in the town of Longmeadow. He died in 1804 at the age of 77 years.
